Craigslist and Canon

Back in ’88 I was given a Canon AE-1. That camera was responsible for getting me interested in photography. It was stolen a few years later, and I’ve always toyed with the idea of buying another one just for old time’s sake.

Yesterday, I found someone on Craigslist giving one away, and tonight I picked it up. It needs a little work, but holding that camera brings back all kinds of memories. Shooting Highwood basketball games, scenery, portraits and lightning storms. It was the camera I used for my first photography class in Great Falls. I put hundreds of rolls of film through that camera while I had it.

Macro lenses

50mm-macro-dsc_1356-768

I have this little lens in my bag, and hardly ever take it out. I’m so busy with the wide-angle or standard 50mm lens, that I never really stop to think about getting up-close and personal with the smaller things around me.

Sometimes it’s nice to slow down and really look at the the things you’re surrounded by every day. Then grab a photo. I think I’m going to impose a “macro only” week… For the next seven days, the 7D will only wear the 50mm Macro lens. We’ll see what happens.

Here are the results from this morning:

Canon 5D Mark II and the Japan tsunami

Image

I’ve been looking for a 5D in the Portland area, and am having no luck. There are some kits available (with the L lens,) but they run $3,300.

Phone call with [redacted]:
Me: Any 5D Mark II bodies in stock?
Sales Associate: No, just the kits.
Me: they run $3,300, right?
Sales Associate: No, the price just went up because of the tsunami.

Supply and demand. I’m all for capitalism, but damn. I can’t believe I’m having so much trouble finding a 5D body only in Portland. If anyone knows anyone selling a used one in Portland, let me know.
